To
raise
awareness
of
the
value
museums,
bring
to
societal
advancement,
the
International
Council
of
Museums
(ICOM)
initially
proposed
International
Museum
Day
(IMD)
in
1977.
The
International
Council
for
Museums
is
a
global
association
of
museums
&
museum
professionals
with
the
mandate
to
promote
public
awareness
of
the
world’s
natural
and
cultural
heritage,
both
tangible
and
intangible,
via
research,
conservation,
and
education.
The
first
International
Day
took
place
on
May
18,
1978,
and
only
22
nations
participated.
Since
then,
IMD
has
expanded
into
a
worldwide
event,
attracting
participation
from
tens
of
thousands
of
museums
&
cultural
organizations
each
year
across
more
than
150
nations.
The
selection
of
May
18th
as
the
IMD
date
is
significant
because
it
coincides
with
the
anniversary
of
the
establishment
of
ICOM
in
1946.
International
Council
of
Museums
(ICOM)
is
a
non-governmental
organization
(NGO)
whose
mission
is
to
support
and
safeguard
cultural
institutions
and
museums
all
over
the
world.
ICOM
is
now
known
as
the
top
professional
association
for
museum
&
heritage
professionals
in
the
world,
with
more
than
44,000
members
in
138
nations.
